Whether you tie up your boat to a marina in Goolwa, unhook your caravan in a park here, sling your swag under the stars by the Murray River or check into a Goolwa motel there is something for everyone here on the south coast. The Fleurieu Peninsula (it took me awhile to be able to spell and pronounce it correctly) is a beautiful part of the world. South Australia’s little secret and a great place for a holiday.
The Alexandrina Council are responsible for this neck of the woods and what a pretty place it is. Fishing is big down here, with Hindmarsh Island just over the bridge. You have the Southern Ocean on one side and the Murray River on the other, two great bodies of water for recreation and adventure. Surfing is big in Goolwa with swells and breaks; and plenty of surf shops. Boating is more a way of life than a hobby down here, with yacht clubs and marinas aplenty. The Goolwa regatta and wooden boat festival pull in big crowds.
Goolwa has markets, museums and a lively art scene. Art galleries abound and there are wineries, breweries and interesting shops to peruse. Goolwa attracts holiday makers and those lucky Australians on permanent holiday – retirees. Goolwa has a great golf course, with a wonderful club attached – South Lakes Golf Club. There are tennis clubs, cricket and footy clubs too.
Fish and chips are popular in Goolwa, along with some great wood fired pizzzas and lately a bit of Indian as well. Wonderful cafes and restaurants keep the tourists and locals happy. You can purchase good produce and all the ingredients needed to cook up your own storm in Goolwa, as many people do I am sure.
Goolwa is playing on the water, surf skis, paddle boards, boats and surfing. Goolwa is hiring and riding bicycles on the pathways beside the Murray River, along with roller blades, skateboards and scooters. Goolwa is long walks breathing in the finer points of nature. Watching Pelicans land in the water like great flying machines approaching a runway. Walking the dog and playing with laughing children on the swings. Picnics and birthday parties, glasses of wine by the river observing the sun setting in the twilight sky.
Goolwa is all of these things and much more.
